Day 1- Mission Trip to Rwanda

Today we had a very informative day. We woke up, ate breakfast, and then decided to poke around the neighborhood a while. We walked around, meeting the people in the neighborhood, seeing some of the sights, and getting completely exhausted walking up one of Rwanda's 1000 hills :). On the way home we ran into a bunch of kids, who wanted to play soccer. Most of the team joined them and played a game of soccer. After soccer we had lunch, and then headed out on the town. We headed to the forex to exchange money, and after much bartering we got a good enough exchange rate, we make our exchanges and went on to our next event. We stopped at the Hotel Des Mille Collines (Hotel Rwanda), to see the hotel that saved many Tutsi's lifes during the genocide.
We then went to the genocide memorial. A memorial in the center of Kigali to remind and educate people on the genocide, in hopes that it will never happen again. (in 1994, there was a genocide in Rwanda that killed 1,000,000 people. The Hutu people tried to eradicate the Tutsi race, and almost successfully did so. A genocide which lasted over 100 days, turned a beautiful country the size of Maryland was covered in death. ) The memorial not only goes though the events leading up to the genocide, but it also has the stories of survivors, Stories of people who saved many during the genocide. It also shows other genocides that have happened all over the world. It is amazing how many genocides have happened all around the world. The world has seen a lot of evil. Out side there was mass graves, that rest 300,000 bodies from the genocide. We were able to walk around, and see what these people we are working with have gone though.
After the memorial, we went to Bourbon Coffee to talk and process about what we just walked though. It is so encouraging to now walk around this country that is now so beautiful and peaceful. A country so clean and unified. Its hard to think that this country was once in this state! But its also so encouraging to see how the people of Rwanda have really pulled them selves back on their feet, and put their country back together.

The day was heavy, but it was good. We were able to be a little more educated, so we can better work with the people here in Rwanda, to better sympathize with the horrific event these people have seen and gone through.
